COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Middlesex is competing at the top level of the Championship for the Bill Beaumont Cup.

Middlesex 18 Hertfordsdhire 16

RESULT & REPORT BY Andy Mortimer (President of Middlesex) Gloucestershire 39 v Middlesex 7

After last week’s promising rearguard action by the seaside, we produced an altogether more wooden performance at Cinderford, in the Forest of Dean, against Gloucestershire.

There was a howling diagonal wind which we opted to face in the first half, a decision not immediately appropriate as we shipped two tries in the first 15 minutes, both of them pretty soft. We steadied down after that and with 10minutes of the half remaining looked as though we might turn round just the 14 points adrift; not to be, another defensive lapse and a penalty left us facing a 24 point deficit going into the break.

With the wind now in our favour, we started very smartly with a try from Junior Harrison but as the half progressed it was clear we were not going to be able to assert ourselves up front nor, in using the adequate possession, find the finishing touches to some promising moves. They scored a couple more tries to leave us in their trail

Probably not a game we could have won but certainly an opportunity missed to give them a hard time of it.

Herts at Staines is a key game. One of us stays in the Bill Beaumont Cup and one of us retreats to the Vase so come and support Middlesex.
