REFEREE TRAINING

Of Importance to all clubs at all levels

REFEREE TRAINING

Is your club preparing for the new season? Are you ready? Do you have enough “qualified” referees? Can your club cover all the junior and youth games that take place on a Sunday morning that the Referee Society cannot?

So many questions – can your club answer them honestly and positively.

Do not panic yet. The London Society of Rugby Football Union Referees in conjunction with the Rugby Football Union Referees Department will be offering Referee Courses around the county.

Having a qualified referee may help your players, and spectators, enjoy the game more. Being able to apply and manage the Laws of the Game safely and fairly will enable the players to play with more confidence to show off their individual and team skills.

The courses that will be on offer will be the following:-

• Entry Level Referee Award • Mini – Midi Referee Award

A schedule of Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA) courses is being compiled and will be available on the County and London Society web sites in the coming weeks. The Mini- Midi course is normally arranged to suit individual clubs or at club clusters as requested.

The Entry Level Referee Award is a new course that has replaced the old National Foundation Course. This course contains a mixture of theoretical and practical refereeing – candidates will be asked to referee phases of play during the course.

The ELRA course consists of three stages:-

• Stage 1 & 2 are delivered together over two days. • Stage 3 is taken by those referees who wish to progress to Society refereeing.

The course is delivered over two day normally spaced seven days apart to allow the delegates to absorb the course materials.

The contents of the ELRA course are as follows:-

• Stage 1(Day 1)

• Pre-course work and reading • Referee Attitudes • Contextual Judgement & Materiality • Principles of Refereeing • Health & Safety • Elements of the Game (Practical) • Examination • Feedback

• Stage 2 (Day 2)

• Recap on Stage 1 • Child Protection • Problem Areas of Refereeing • Referee Management • Practical Refereeing • Feedback

During the course the delegates will be observed and assessed by the course tutor(s).

The Mini – Midi Referee course comprises the following elements:-

• Summary of the Mini – Midi (Continuum) Rules • Principles of Refereeing • Child Protection • Health & Safety • Referee Positioning • Referee Communication • Referee Management • Examination

The course lasts for 3 to 4 hours dependent upon the delegates.

There will another course for those currently qualified referees which will highlighted in the next issue.
