July 17, 2008

RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

Press Release

Millwall and Watford are among eight clubs around the London & South East region to have been given grants or loans by the Rugby Football Foundation to help develop their facilities.

Millwall RFC have been awarded £56,000 – a grant of £6000 plus a loan of £50,000 – towards refurbishment of their clubhouse.

Watford RFC have been awarded £35,000 – £29,000 in a loan and a grant of £6000 – towards an extension of the changing rooms at their Knutsford Playing Fields ground.

Other clubs in the region to have received grants are Dorking, Winchester, Ely, Haringey, Midhurst and Chiswick.

The funding was approved at the most recent meeting of the RFF, a charitable trust established by the Rugby Football Union to provide funding for capital projects at junior clubs to support the recruitment and retention of players.

Since 2003 the RFF has distributed £10 million in grants and loans, attracting an additional £16.46 million in partnership funding.

The RFF Trustees have also approved a streamlined two-stage process for applications for interest-free loans by clubs at Level Four and below in the English Clubs Championship who are identified as high priority within their Constituent Body Facility Plans.

This aims to boost the grass roots by ensuring that clubs without sufficient facilities to cater for their current and projected playing programmes gain prioritised support for their projects by the RFU and RFF.
